Who is involved? The sacrament of reconciliation is between the penitent and Christ. But the Priest conducts the ceremony, acting as a bridge between us and Christ.
PreparationThis is a time to pray and reflect on our conscience. We think about times we may have hurt others (sinned).
GreetingThe priest will welcome us the room for reconciliation.
Sign of the CrossWe make the sign of the cross together with the priest and the priest invites us to trust in God’s mercy.
IntroductionThis is a time to tell the priest about yourself. Have you ever made reconciliation before? If it is not your first time, how long has it been since you last participated reconciliation? This is when we show Jesus the desire to be friends again.
ConfessionWe ask for forgiveness from Jesus by confessing our sins. This is when we talk to the priest about times when we may have hurt others. The priest may simply listen, or may offer advice.
PenanceThe priest will tell you ways you can make right your wrongs. It may be helping or being kind to the people you hurt, or it may be saying a prayer.
Act of SorrowThis is when we say a short prayer to express that we are sorry for our sin and promise not to do it again.
AbsolutionThe priest extends his hand over us and forgives us of our sins. We accept the forgiveness of Jesus.
ConclusionThis is the end of the reconciliation ceremony. The priest says a short prayer expressing praise and thanks to God. He will then tell you to go in peace.
